Why We May Not Want to Heal
There may be times when we do not want to heal... Not want to heal? What?! Now don't go getting your blood pressure up until you read the explanation.
Having the complex human natures that we do, there sometimes is a subconscious side to us that may not want to heal. There may be an up side to holding on to an illness. This is a fairly common problem along with
avoiding emotional healing.
There are a variety of reasons as to why we believe it may serve us not to heal. It is time to do some deep down soul-searching to determine if any of the following apply in our particular situation. There is much power in awareness. Awareness and desire are the first steps to healing.
Why We May Not Want To Heal Physically
We can be really good at hiding things from ourselves. We fool ourselves when our conscious mind believes one thing while the subconscious mind believes something else. This is known as psychological reversal. The following possibilities outline different ways in which we might "psychologically reverse" thereby disallowing ourselves to heal physically.
- Sympathy - There may be a part of us wanting to play the victim and being ill provides the sympathy we desire.
- Attention - A part of us may have felt ignored or unnoticed in the past and illness provides the attention we crave.
- Sense of self-worth - Feelings we may have of low self-esteem or unworthiness are fed by the artificial sense of self-worth that is received from having large amounts of money spent on one's self.
- Relieved of responsibilities - Illness may provide an "out" when we feel stuck in a situation and/or feel overwhelmed by the responsibilities involved. This may include feeling stuck in a job that you dislike.
- A lack of desire to live - Our inner self may feel that life is not worth living. Of course, there is an appropriate time to pass on, but this is not what I am referring to. I am referring to the times when a person just wants to give up when there is really a fullness of life yet to be experienced.

The Value of Allowing Ourselves to Heal
What is important to understand in all of the above scenarios is that none of these reasons is really in our best interest. Yes - sympathy, attention and feelings of self-worth can be obtained by holding on to an illnes.
But, how wonderful it would be to feel good enough about ourselves that we don't have to be fed by outside influences. Instead, we could give sympathy and understanding to others in need and our own feelings of self-worth would naturally increase as we do so.
In many cases that attention and sympathy that is being received is only temporary because people will in time feel that they are being manipulated and will withdraw. Feelings of true self-worth must come from within first and then those around you will give you the genuine caring and attention that is desired.
None of this is meant to be criticism. It seems that we all go through times when we need understanding and attention from others and that is O.K. There are times when we do need to either change our circumstances or our attitudes to lessen the pressures of our responsibilities. And there are times when we feel depressed and need to be lifted up. We are here to help each other.
